The Purpose of The Brenda Fix Newsletter Series
Know Your Rights: Navigating DVR with Confidence
When I first entered vocational rehabilitation, I didn't know what I didn't know.
I wasn't sure what questions to ask, what documents I should keep, or how decisions were made. I trusted my counselor, but I also wished someone had taken the time to explain the process in plain language.
Over the years, I've learned something important.
The more you understand how DVR works, the more confident you become in shaping your own future.
That's why I created this series.
My goal isn't to teach you how to argue with your counselor or challenge every decision. In fact, it's just the opposite. I want to help you build a positive, professional partnership with your DVR team—one where you feel informed, prepared, and confident participating in decisions about your employment goals.
Each month, we'll explore topics that many of us wish we'd understood from the very beginning.
Together, we'll answer questions like:
Why is my Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) so important?
Can my services change after my IPE is signed?
What is the Client Assistance Program (CAP), and when should I contact them?
What records should I keep?
How do I request information in an accessible format?
How can I communicate more effectively with my counselor?
What should I do if I don't understand something?
We'll also talk about informed choice, accessibility, organization, timelines, documentation, and other practical tools that can help you become a stronger advocate for yourself throughout your vocational rehabilitation journey.
One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that knowledge builds confidence.
When you understand the process, you're more comfortable asking questions. When you keep good records, you're better prepared for meetings and decisions. When you know your rights and responsibilities, you're able to participate as a true partner in your rehabilitation—not simply someone receiving services.
Remember, your counselor brings professional expertise.
You bring something just as important—your dreams, your experiences, and your vision for the future.
The best outcomes happen when those two perspectives come together.
I hope this series helps you feel more confident, more informed, and more empowered every step of the way.
Because this is your journey.
Your goals matter.
Your choices matter.
And your voice matters.
