When Someone Believed in Me: From VR Consumer to VR Counselor
I know vocational rehabilitation from two perspectives—as a Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) counselor and as someone whose own life was transformed through VR services.
When I lost my sight, I wasn't just losing my vision—I was losing the life I thought I would have. After losing my sight, I faced the challenge of rebuilding my life and learning how to navigate the world as a blind person.
The future I had planned suddenly disappeared, and I was left wondering how I would work, live independently, or find my place in the world again. Then I met a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor who changed the course of my life. They didn't focus on what I had lost. Instead, they saw what was still possible. They believed in my abilities before I believed in them myself, and that belief became the foundation for rebuilding my future.
Their support alone, however, was not enough. I had to make a choice. I had to take responsibility for my future and commit to learning an entirely new way of living. I learned to use screen readers and computers, developed orientation and mobility skills, mastered independent living techniques, and discovered confidence I never knew I possessed. Step by step, I rebuilt my independence, found meaningful employment, and created a life that at times feels nothing short of a fairy tale.
Today, I have the privilege of serving as a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor. I bring both professional training and lived experience to my work because I have been on both sides of the relationship. I know the fear that comes with uncertainty, the courage it takes to begin again, and the life-changing difference a knowledgeable, compassionate counselor can make.
I also know that lasting success is built through partnership. A counselor provides expertise, encouragement, and opportunity, but each individual must choose to do the work, accept responsibility, and believe that growth is possible. Taking responsibility is not a burden—it is an opportunity to discover your strengths, build confidence, and create the life you want.
My hope is that my story reminds VR counselors that their work changes lives, often in ways they may never fully realize. And I hope it encourages every person receiving VR services to believe that, with commitment, perseverance, and the right support, they can build a future that exceeds their own expectations. I know this because I have lived it.
